I'm not sure Borders is in the wrong here. They have to make a profit. Besides, I never consider books "unnecessary expenditures". In fact, I'd argue that reading all summer might be the best way to spend the summer if one cannot physically leave town.
What about collaborating with local libraries? Libraries seem to be an even cheaper way to keep up with summer reading lists. And don't forget the growing number of books available on Google.

I agree about the profit and that, yes, they are a business, but can't they turn a profit and help kids at the same time?
I never meant to imply that buying books were "unnecessary expenditures" just that with all the other cutbacks families are making, it would be nice to see profitable books stores help out a bit. I also agree with you about the library. I always make this the first suggestion to my students.
